Girl Scouts Day by sonoko
On March 8, I took part in a Girl Scouts Volunteer event at the JCC.It was my first time volunteering in the U.S. I felt nervous about it. At MFWI , I always talk to someone in English,(such as a teachers and RAs) but they know I am not good at speaking English. They try to understand what I want to say. However, children are different. I was worried about my communication. I taught calligraphy to children. I had not touched a brush for a while, but still I could. I felt some relief. When children arrived at the JCC I was so excited, because all of the girls were so cute!! I thought"I want to talk with them." My anxiety disappeared then.First, I showed my pieces. I wrote some kanji (such as doll, spring, etc), and taught them how to read kanji. They were good students. They were interested in kanji and Japan. Next,I tried to translate their name from English to kanji. It was difficult work, because translating needs consideration. A name is important, I had to choose happy words. However, English names have difficult pronunciations. It was a great trouble for me. However, almost all girls were pleased with their name in kanji. I felt happy when I saw their smiles. I want to take part in next volunteer activity!
